St. Peter’s Square

Before going inside St. Peter’s Basilica, we decided to walk around St. Peter’s Square.

Even here I was able to find out some interesting bits and pieces.

Here’s a few of them…

The thirteen statues on the balustrade are:  Christ the Redeemer -in the middle (19 feet high),

St. John the Baptist and the 11 Apostles.

The statue is 5.55m in height, on a pedestal 4.91m in height.

There are 2 black marble discs near the fountain in the center of the Square.

If you step on the disc and look at the Bernini colonnades, you will only see one row (the front row).

But if you step off the disc, you will see all four rows of the colonnades.

Optical illusion at its finest.

Bernini was said to be a mathematical genius 🙂

Stepping off the marble disc… Now, you see all four rows!

If you’ve noticed there are also Statues on top of the colonnades.

The Obelisk found in the center of the Square has been successfully moved three times!
